A Southern Charm :: The History of Our Property
The Hazlehurst House was built in 1829 by Abner Davis. It proudly displays high
ceilings and hand blown window panes that show markings from soldiers that stayed
there during the War Between the States. The house was utilized as a hospital during
that period caring for both northern and southern wounded soldiers. The solid wood
doors are original and have their original locks. The history found in this home
range from original deeds of land to precious love letters dated during the 1800's.
Three acres of land, abundant with magnolia, oak, and cedar trees, have been the
crowning glory since the land was granted to Ezekiel Cloud, a Revolutionary Soldier,
in 1827. The rear of the manor is graced with a boxwood hedge garden said to be
over 170 years old. Also located to the left rear of the house, is a brick fireplace,
which are the remains of the original kitchen. During that period, the kitchen was
detached from the house. It was also used for the living quarters for the house
attendants and is very rich with history.
The house was renamed "The Hazlehurst House" for Mrs. Cornelia Hazlehurst, a fun
loving Southern Belle. Since the early 1800's, The Hazlehurst House has represented
prominent members of the community.
